Played by Taylor Kinney in seasons two and three, Mason Lockwood is Richard Lockwood's younger brother and Tyler Lockwood's uncle. Mason returns to Mystic Falls for his brother's funeral, after being away for seven years. Mason later catches Tyler and Jeremy Gilbert drinking beer and hints for Jeremy to leave. He then starts drinking with his nephew himself. When Tyler later gets upset and starts to get aggressive to his mother, Mason steps in and knocks him to the floor. Tyler is confused as to why he got mad so easily, and Mason tells him it is the Lockwood curse.
Derek Hale, portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin, is a werewolf by genetic lycanthropy, passed down through his family line. He is one of three survivors of the fire that burned down his family's home (the other two being his older sister, Laura Hale, and his uncle, Peter Hale). He initially returns to Beacon Hills searching for his sister, who he later discovers was murdered by his uncle, Peter, the Alpha, and further mutilated by the Argents. In the season 1 finale, Derek becomes the new Alpha after killing his uncle to avenge Laura's death.
Scott McCall, portrayed by Tyler Posey, is the series' main protagonist. Scott is bitten by a werewolf, transforming him into a werewolf as well. Using his new supernatural abilities, Scott becomes co-captain of his high-school lacrosse team. He falls in love with Allison, who he later discovers to be part of an old werewolf-hunter family. Seeing his new abilities as a curse, Scott wishes to find a cure so he wouldn't injure anyone.
